Our Story

ABOUT US

Harkaari preserves the rich heritage of Indian craftsmanship with a range of luxurious home furnishing products. Harkaari is our play on the Indian term for workmanship ‘kaarigari’ and also means ‘strong woman’ in Urdu. Handcrafted in India, we offer high quality luxury living products in the United states by talented artisans using traditional skills passed down through generations. We take pride in our traditional smocking techniques, quality fabric and unmatched aesthetic, with over two decades of expertise in exporting luxury home furnishing products across the globe.

Our brand is built on good values and big dreams of a small non-governmental organization based in Bhatinda, Punjab called the Harkaari Foundation. It is dedicated to the upliftment and empowerment of women from lower socio-economic backgrounds by providing gainful employment opportunities within the textile industry. Our charitable foundation offers women training and daily wages in exchange for their handiwork as a means to enable them to achieve financial independence and provide for their families.

Over the past year, we have given employment to more than 100 women on a monthly basis producing textile-based products, primarily cushions, throw blankets, quilts, wall hangings and other decorative handicrafts of unique and exquisite design with high quality craftsmanship exported to retailers across the globe. The proceeds from the sale of these products are then reinvested towards the further development and charitable initiatives by the Harkaari Foundation.

"Owning a piece of ‘Harkaari’ is to join a movement of fair trade to hone and nurture skill and deserving talent for a self sustainable ecosystem."

ABOUT THE FOUNDER

A double major in Media And Communications  Cultural Studies, from the University of Melbourne, Keerat Kaur had been managing the reins of her family owned textile business – Swift Corporation Ltd until she decided to launch Harkaari, her own line of luxury living products. With a sole purpose to celebrate the robust heritage of intricate village crafts and providing employment opportunities for women, Keerat founded The Harkaari Foundation along with her mother, Mrs Simran, as a development center as well as a small factory unit, where women can develop their skills with hands-on training in skills such as stitching, weaving, hand embroidery, and block printing. Harkaari is a self sustainable business model that empowers women to raise living standards and counter social troubles such as female feticide and domestic abuse. With a keen interest and taste in the global decor market, Keerat plans to expand Harkaari into several International markets in the near future.
